You’re Ugly Too
Two outsiders form an unlikely pair in this sensitive Irish tragicomedy.
Will is given compassionate release six months before his prison sentence is over to care for his twelve-year-old niece, Stacey, after the death of her mother. The girl, grappling with the situation as best she can, minces no words, never fearing to open her mouth to anyone, least of all her uncle, who is often the target of her biting remarks. But when, amidst dramatic circumstances, Belgian Emilie suddenly appears at their door, both uncle and niece seem to find hope that they, too, can live a normal life. The threat that Will may have to return to prison, however, still hangs in the air… Mark Noonan’s sensitive debut about two solitary outsiders brims with subtle, cynical Irish humor leagues apart from the benevolent comicality of the Czechs.
